All I want for Christmas is to listen to Michael Bublé all throughout the day because everything about him makes me feel warm and cozy inside. He’s such a charismatic and charming performer. The atmosphere lights up when he walks on stage. When his videos flash across the screen, I’m compelled to drop what I’m doing and watch him. He’s easy on the eyes and heaven for the ears. That’s why it’s delightful to learn that he’s given his fans a holiday “gift” — his new album Michael Bublé’s Christmas.
Everyone loves Michael Bublé — old, young, male, female — it doesn’t matter. He’s universally appealing. Michael Bublé’s Christmas does not come as a surprise to loyal fans who know a bit about how Michael’s singing career began. He can recall that—as early as age five—he enjoyed listening with his family to their favorite holiday album, Bing Crosby’s White Christmas. When he was thirteen, his family noticed his powerhouse voice when he belted out the lyric, “May your days be merry and bright” during a family sing-a-long in the car.
What some people don’t know about Michael Bublé is that he’s had dual citizenship in Canada and Italy since 2005. His maternal Italian grandfather, Demetrio Santagà—who came from Preganziol near Venice—was the greatest contributor to his career success. Santagà paid for Michael’s singing lessons and when Michael was 16 he got him bookings in nightclubs because he offered his services as a plumber in exchange for the nightclub giving Michael time on stage.
In a 2004 interview in Liverpool Michael said, “My grandfather was really my best friend growing up. He was the one who opened me up to a whole world of music that seemed to have been passed over by my generation… the first time my granddad played me the Mills Brothers, something magical happened. The lyrics were so romantic, so real, the way a song should be for me. It was like seeing my future flash before me. I wanted to be a singer and I knew that this was the music that I wanted to sing.”
There are more than a few delightful surprises in Michael Bublé’s Christmas. For one, Michael sings the song that inspired his career, “White Christmas” as a duet with fellow Canadian Shania Twain. He sings “Jingle Bells” with The Puppini Sisters. They are a U.K.-based, neo-swing vocal trio inspired by The Andrews Sisters. The founder, Marcella Puppini, is actually Italian and was born in Bologna. The rendition is adorable.
Michael is very proud of Michael Bublé’s Christmas. He remarked about the album, “It’s always been my favorite holiday and I knew that one day I would record the ultimate Christmas record.” There will be plenty of opportunities to see him perform songs from Michael Bublé’s Christmas during the holiday season. There will be a NBC TV special on December 6th at 8:00pm. On December 7th he’ll appear on Live with Kelly. Following this, CBS 60 Minutes will be doing a profile on Michael. He’ll perform at the annual NBC Christmas Tree Lighting. He returns to co-host on Live with Kelly on December 15th and 16th and he’ll appear on Saturday Night Live on December 17th.
